Top Destinations for Scenic Travel This Fall

By Jane Montgomery

Oct 1, 2024

Ah, fall. The time of year when the air turns crisp, the leaves burst into fiery reds, greens, and hues of golden yellow, and suddenly everything feels a little cozier. If you’re anything like me, fall means not just pumpkin spice everything, but also the perfect excuse for a getaway. I know I am craving a fallventure! So, grab your sweaters and boots because I’ve rounded up three must-visit walkable destinations to soak in the autumn breeze and views.

1. New Orleans, Louisiana: A Fall Retreat

When you think of New Orleans, you might picture Mardi Gras madness or sweltering summer days, but fall? Oh, it’s a vibe. As the heat starts to drop, the city comes alive with festivals and celebrations. Think: Oktoberfest, the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, and Halloween like you’ve never seen before. I mean, is there really a better place to be for a spooky ghost tour?!

Here's the best part. You get all the New Orleans charm without the humidity—cobblestone streets, jazz music wafting from every corner, and those iconic historic homes. Don't forget to grab a café au lait and a beignet at Café du Monde (or my personal favorite - Cafe Beignet) and stroll through the French Quarter, where you’ll find festive decorations giving you all the spooky magic feels.

2. Fredericksburg, Texas: Wine and Hill Country Charm

Let’s talk about Texas Hill Country in the fall. Specifically, Fredericksburg, where vineyards stretch out against the Texas hill country backdrop. The small-town charm is truly next level with views that are seriously breathtaking. The big question is, are you going for the views or the win? Don't worry, both are right and neither is wrong! More about the wine-Fredericksburg’s wineries are perfect for fall afternoons where you can sit back with a glass of locally-made wine, while resting on a rocking chair, and take in the autumn air.

Beyond the vineyards, Fredericksburg hosts some fantastic fall festivals, including Oktoberfest, where you can enjoy German music, food, and dancing in the heart of Texas. Shopping on the adorable Main Street is a must and I also recommend renting a convertable car and taking a scenic drive through the countryside. Trust- you will feel that perfect fall mix of laid-back vibes and rustic beauty that you may not know you are missing out on this fall.

3. Burlington, Vermont: Quintessential New England Fall

If you crave a classic autumn experience in New England, Burlington, Vermont, should be on the top of your list. Picture this: rolling hills painted with the brightest reds, oranges, and yellows you’ve ever seen. The crisp air, the smell of woodsmoke—this is really what all those fall visions and dreams are made of.

Burlington is more than a fall destination, it is a coastal retreat. The town sits on the shores of Lake Champlain, giving you the best of both worlds—gorgeous lake views and easy access to nearby hiking trails for that full nature immersion. I recommend scheduling time to pick apples, sip hot cider, and explore the cute-as-can-be downtown, Burlington. This coastal gem offers that postcard-perfect thrill. You will think you have entered a Hallmark movie and never want to leave!

So, are you craving the cultural buzz of New Orleans, the laid-back charm of Texas Hill Country, or the classic "Hallmark vibe" of the New England coast? All of these destinations bring something special to the season and we recommend adding all three to your bucket-list.

Flip a coin and pack your bags, its time for your next adventure!
